Insulin on Board (IOB): Your Active Insulin
Insulin on board (IOB) — also called active insulin — is the amount of insulin from your recent doses that is still working in your body. After you inject, insulin keeps lowering your blood sugar for several hours.
Why IOB matters
If you take a correction dose without accounting for insulin that is still active from an earlier dose, the two can add up — “insulin stacking” — and push your blood sugar too low. Knowing your IOB before dosing again is how you avoid that.
How IOB is estimated
IOB is worked out from how long your insulin stays active, when your previous doses were taken, and how large they were. Simple devices approximate it with a straight-line decline; Jade models the full insulin-action curve for a more accurate figure, including small amounts still active after the usual active-insulin time.
How Jade helps
Jade tracks your IOB continuously and subtracts it from any new dose calculation, and shows it on your blood-sugar prediction so you can see a low coming.
